Launching of the 212 ConnectU Mentoring Program
Zack Rosenberg | November 23rd, 2010As many of you know I have been working hard the last several months to launch a mentoring program for the 212 Advertising club. If you are unfamiliar with 212, it is the largest advertising club in NYC with over 3,500 members. That’s a lot right?
I learned a lot in the process of putting this together and wanted to share a couple of thoughts but most importantly I want you to join us! We are hosting our kickoff at the Datran Media offices on 11/30 from 6-9 with an incredible panel that includes David Berkowitz of 360i, Christopher Cunningham (if you know me well enough you will know why I like that name) of AppSavvy, and Michael Jaindal of Buddy Media, etc. You can learn more and register by clicking here.
While the concept of mentoring is nothing new, for 212 it is. I find this concept to be more and more important with the more we rely on technology. As the world becomes smaller so too does our perspective, we tend to think to ourselves that the answers to everything are at our fingertips. Perhaps to black and white questions they are but not to relationships. This is the value of a mentor. A person to turn to with experience that is in your corner and has your best interest at heart.
My personal mentee experience is not so concrete nor is it defined but the people who have taken me under their wings have truly changed my life. The people I’ve met and the ideas I have decided to pursue or neglect came from their influence. Can we do the same for you?
What would you like to get from a mentoring relationship?
What I have learned through the process is that people genuinely want to teach and even more genuinely want to learn. I bet everyone one of their college professors collectively just said “What!” Its true! Perhaps the motivator is money or a job or networking. Whatever it is the more you put in, the more you will get out.
The second thing I learned is that people want to be matched with someone they perceive as similar to them. Similar can meet a lot of things but in this instance it means a similar career path.
I suppose the best way to find out is to show up on Tuesday 11/30 and follow the process. I hope to deliver an experience you wont forget and hopefully chose to pass on to others.
